Classes
Our levels
All classes are run as drop in sessions.
Level 1 - Absolute beginners - classes rotate around a 4 week pattern
This level caters specifically for those people who have never done salsa before. A quick four weeks to get you settled into the basic steps, transferring your weight between steps, introduction to timing and starting to get you used to dancing with a partner in this lead-follow dance.
Level 2 - Beginners - classes rotate around an 8 week pattern
At beginners we continue to develop your dancing with a partner in terms of leading and following building up your repertoire of moves. Understanding the timing within salsa music will start to become a focus point. The leads will begin to start learning how to link moves and come up with a routine of their own for freestyle. Floorcraft for freestyle will be an added element taught in this level. Some styling elements may come up in this level from time to time.
Level 3 - Bridging the gap - classes rotate around an 8 week pattern
Bridging the gap ensures you have all the fundamental principles of salsa dancing that you will need to progress on to the Improver level and above. Dancing on time is one of the vital principles needed to go on into improvers.
Appropriate tension and resistance from the lead and follower will be stressed at this level. Leads will learn you link moves in a smooth fashion so that they look effortless and that it hard to separate out the individual moves in any sequence dancers are dancing. An appreciation for styling will be introduced. Again the importance of floorcraft in freestyle dancing will be emphasised.
Level 4 - Improvers
At the improver level we start to double up on a lot of the foundation moves from levels 1-3, adding in an extra turn where there was only one in the foundation move, or adding in a turn where previously there was not. Due to this reason is essential dancers have got to grips with their timing. Furthermore effective changing of weight between feet and control of balance will also be needed.
The improver level will give you all of the required footwork patterns that are danced over the basic salsa rhythm. Along with well linked combinations of moves that flow one onto another. The shines element of salsa dancing will be covered much more in improvers than in previous levels. As will body isolation & movements. A further sense of styling will be developed throughout.
Level 5 - Intermediate - (not yet offered but speak to us if you have interest in intermediate classes)
Further break down of the basic salsa timing rhythm reveals syncopations that can be used to add in even more turns or pieces of footwork. This will bring in all the higher level components of salsa such as complex footwork patterns & shines, turns, and spinning techniques.
Leaders will learn more intricate leads and arm movements, as well leads that may make use of the followers' shoulders or hips. With the leads occupied with more difficult leading methods' followers will receive the larger proportion of turning and spinning accompanied by more elaborate styling.
